How a xspare voice room works

  1. 1

    Host a room

Give the room a name and pick an avatar. Your link is ready the moment you step in.

  2. 2

    Share the link

Copy the URL or hit share. Friends only need a name and an avatar to join.

  3. 3

    Talk

Everyone is on open mic with a live speaking indicator. The host sets the backdrop for the whole room.

A Discord backup built for voice

When your usual app is down, you still want to talk. xspare keeps the part that matters: clear, open group voice with friends.

Studio-quality voice
48 kHz Opus audio at a high bitrate, with echo cancellation and optional noise suppression.
Your mic, your levels
Switch microphones on the fly and set your input volume. Adjust each person in the room too.
Host controls
Mute or remove anyone. Pick a synced animated backdrop, a solid color, or an image, GIF, or video from a link.
No accounts, no installs
Runs in the browser on desktop and mobile. Calls are peer to peer, with no central voice server to go down.

Questions, answered

What is xspare?

xspare is a free group voice chat that runs entirely in your browser. One person hosts a room, shares the link, and everyone who opens it joins the call. There are no accounts and nothing to install.

Is xspare a Discord alternative?

For voice calls with friends, yes. xspare gives you open group voice, a live speaking indicator, host moderation, and shared animated backdrops. It does not have text channels or servers, so it works best as a reliable backup when Discord is down.

Do I need an account or an app to join?

No. Open the invite link, pick a display name and an avatar, and you are in the room. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop and mobile.

How many people can be in a room?

Rooms work best with up to about eight people. Voices travel directly between browsers, so every extra person adds a connection for everyone else.

How good is the audio quality?

xspare sends 48 kHz audio over WebRTC using the Opus codec at a high bitrate. You can choose your microphone, set your input volume, and turn noise suppression on or off.

What can the host control?

The host chooses the room backdrop, which syncs to everyone on the call. The host can also mute or remove anyone in the room. Backdrops include animated three.js scenes like Halloween, Christmas, Cyberpunk, Space, and Ocean, plus a solid color, or your own image, GIF, or short looping video link.

Is it private and is anything recorded?

Calls are peer to peer, so audio goes straight between participants and is never recorded or stored by xspare. Room links are not listed anywhere. Anyone with the link can join, so only share it with people you trust.

What happens when the host leaves?

The room closes when the host leaves, because the host keeps the room in sync. To keep talking, open a new room and share the new link.
